Colour Placement – The New Trend

Colour doesn’t need to be all over to have an effect, little is more here. Colour placement lets us use your hair type/face shape to get the most out of your colour.

L’oreal has created 5 different colour techniques to help give customers a picture perfect look.

Soft Contouring.

You may have heard of this technique as it has been trending for a while now but this form of contouring softly shapes your face with a subtle combination of lighter and darker tones. This is good if you like highlights or if you have a grown out balayage.

It creates the illusion of volume by adding a shimmering lightness to your hair. This is for you if the hair is finer and you want to create the voluminous look.

Brunette model portrait shot

This look is good if you are a brunette and you fancy doing something different without having too much of a change. Add a bronze glow to your hair to brighten up your brunette.

If you are bored of the brown and fancy a change then this is the look for you. Boost your brunette locks with a subtle blend of tones that gently melt into each other to give your hair depth & texture.

Colour Glow.

Get your hair glowing with a natural ray of soft golden lights delicately framing the face and illuminating your complexion. This technique is good for refreshing a grown out ombre.

If you like any of the above looks and want to try one for yourself then come into the salon for a consultation and see what we can do for you. All of these looks can be created while using SMARTBOND, which is a hair protector that keeps your locks soft, strong and shiny even after being coloured. For more info on using this in your colour services and the benefits check out our Smartbond article or ask in salon.

Oscars 2017 Highlights

Who rocked the red carpet?

We love to see what hair makeovers the celebs have undergone for nights like the Oscars. Theres so many to choose from but here are our “dos and don’ts” favourites;

Hallie Berry

Opted for a curly, natural look instead of her pixie cut which she is known for. She took to the red carpet rocking her big curls with caramel pieces through them for added texture. She received mixed reviews online with some making jokes on twitter but we loved the curly ‘fro, especially since it was all her natural locks! (yes, all of it is her own hair!

Emma Roberts

Went for a colour change for the award ceremony moving away from her usual blonde and darker looks to a light copper. The new copper tones went so well with her eye and skin colouring. The look was finished off with a soft curl through the ends and classic red lips! The new look apparently was done just a few hours before the event so well done to the colourist for making it come out so well as there was no room for error!

They were the two looks that caught our attention for good reasons but there were also two stars that made me look twice for all the wrong reasons!

What went wrong?

We don’t like to pick faults at other people’s work but what was going on with some of the fringes?! Olivia Culpo and Sofia Boutella, what was you thinking! Olivia looked good as far as her sparkling silver dress was concerned, but her fringe looked greasy and stuck to her forehead. I am guessing the stylist was going for a wet look but it just didn’t work!

As for Sofia’s fringe, were assuming it was intentionally cut the way it was but it looked a good few centimetres too short and the broken up. The choppy style she was going for wasn’t finished properly and ended up just looking uneven and unflattering. Take a look below and judge for yourself 🙂

So there you have it, that is my best and worst highlights of the star’s hairstyles from this years Oscars. Remember to come in for your complimentary fringe trims to avoid any red carpet disasters!

Superbowl ad takes a dig at Trump

It’s not all about hair

Hair stylist can talk sport too ! Plus, it wouldn’t be right to start an article about the Superbowl without saying what a comeback from the New England Patriots! They were trailing by 25 points in the third quarter and produced the greatest comeback in Superbowl history. Beating the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime and claiming their FIFTH Superbowl title. Tom Brady and James White were the stars of the show with Brady leading the comeback and White scoring a record 20 points!

Back to what we know best

We know were not a sports channel but the reason we are talking about the Superbowl is because an ad during the break caught our attention. ‘It’s a 10’ hair care brand did an ad showing various different hairstyles some serious, some comical but the voice over to the images said:

“America, we’re in for four years of awful hair, so it’s up to you to do your part by making up for it with great hair,”…“Do your part. … Let’s make sure these next four years are ‘It’s a 10.’”

Quite obviously a dig at Donald Trumps hair but great marketing by the brand as it certainly got my attention and the attention of many others. If you want to check the ad out then click the link here:

Treat your hair to Pro Fiber

Give your hair some TLC

We hope you’ve seen our post about Smart Bond, which helps protect your hair from damage during colouring services. But let’s introduce you to L’Oréal’s PRO FIBER treatment. Pro fiber is an express treatment which works on the outer layer of your hair.

Why would you use it?

Damaged hair is something a good majority of women have had to deal with at some point. It can be challenging to style and look after when the hair is damaged. Everything from combing to drying can cause issues as the hair is weaker, making it knot up and break a lot easier. The dryness of the hair can also leave the colour looking dull. Because the cuticle is broken the hair won’t have the healthy shiny finish that we all crave. Pro-fiber offers an in-salon solution to help combat all levels of damage, from chemicals to heat.

The range;

After 15 years of research L’oreal has brought forward the range pro fiber which will make damaged hair feel and look softer, shiner and healthier. Depending on the level of damage to your hair there are 3 treatments in the range to choose from. The first being revive, this is for slightly damaged and finer hair. The second is restore, which is for damaged average thickness hair. Finally we have recover for very damaged, thick hair. Along with the in-salon treatment there is also products you can use at home in the range that will prolong the benefits.

How does it work?

After an in-depth consultation we will prepare your hair by applying the appropriate shampoo in the range cleansing the hair of any barriers, I.e. grease, products. We will then apply the concentrate onto the damaged areas of your hair. Last but never least, we will apply the renew masque on top of the concentrate and massage it into the hair for 5 minutes to Lock it all in. you can instantly feel the benefits of this treatment, even before its dried! The more damaged your hair is, the longer it will take to get the condition back. But don’t give it, regular pro fiber treatments will get your bounce back before you know it.

How long the expect to results

The benefits will last between 3-6 weeks depending on your hair routine at home, for example how many times a week you wash your hair or the amount you use straighteners/curlers. Each treatment in the range has a shampoo, conditioner, masque and leave-in conditioner home use. but the most important product is the re-charge booster, you use every fourth shampoo instead of the conditioner which you leave on for 5 minutes and rinse.

If you like the sound of softer and healthier hair then ask about having a pro fiber treatment on your next visit. For prices and any further questions ask in salon and we will be more than happy to help.

SmartBond – All You Need To Know

What is smartbond?

Smartbond is Loreal’s bond strengthening system that has been specifically formulated to work with their colour products. This treatment is a two step process which allows us to protect your hair and prevent damage during any colour service at limelight.

How does smartbond work?

We add step 1 to your colour when mixing, then apply and develop as we normally would. Even though we are using a protection we can not extend the development time for our colours. We won’t push the hair more then it can handle, condition will always be number one priority. When we rinse the colour off we apply step 2, pre-shampoo, and leave it on for 10 minutes. Then we rinse and finish the shampoo process as normal.

Why you ask?

You are not obliged to use Smartbond when having a colour service with us but there are risks to not using it, which are:

  • Damaging the hair by having repeat colouring or lightning services without it.
  • Making the hair bonds weak/brittle and causing the hair to feel dry.
  • Causing too much damage that the hair bonds are not able to be repaired (meaning you need to cut them off and start again).

However if used then you don’t need to worry about the problems above as Smartbond will:

  • Strengthen and keep the hair bond in tact while targeting damaged parts of the hair to improve them.
  • As hair will be in better condition it will improve the finish of your hair colour making it a more overall even colour.
  • Help repair the weak bonds to reverse the feel of damaged hair.

Does it effect the colour?

No, as mentioned above Loreal have made sure it works with all their lighteners and colours and doesn’t affect the lift you get or the tones in the colour.

How much does it cost?

When using Smartbond in tint service’s we charge £10 and when using Smartbond in lightener service’s we charge £20.

Virgin hair but still want smart bond?

Look no further than our luxury Smartbond treatment! You can add this onto either a cut or blow-dry service and it will be applied at the backwash in 2 steps leaving the hair feeling stronger, softer and shinier while helping repair any damaged or weaker hair bonds. We price this treatment at £25 so ask to have one added to your service when booking so you don’t miss out on the day 🙂

This should answer any questions you may have had about Smartbond but if you need to know anything else then ask in salon and we will be happy to answer any questions!

Emma Stone – Get her look

Emma stone has been honoring our screens since 2004, and we have loved seeing what new styles she comes up with.

The Red Head Beauty

When it comes to Emma Stone’s hair she is not afraid to experiment and she shows this with the various colours and styles she has had over the years. In her new film La La Land we love her multi-tonal copper hair. We think out of all the colours Emma has tried the copper tones suit her the best, they work so well with her complexion. Even if a certain tone suits you better it doesn’t mean you can’t try other colours, take Emma for example she has been a brunette, red head and even a blonde. It’s always good to try new things even if you end up doing a full circle.

The Styles

There is not many colours Emma hasn’t tried and this is the same with her her haircuts/styles. She has had long wavy locks, mid-length sleek bobs and short and choppy. The actress also likes to change her fringe, she has had blunt and choppy full fringes, long and sweeping to shorter side fringes. Emma has realised that just adding a fringe, whichever one may be, completely changes her look without any thing drastic. These can be high maintenance, but lucky for you we offer complementary fringe trims in-between your appointments.

Emma Stone to us is style icon, and we can’t wait to she what she rocks next!

Colour Trends of 2016

Now it’s a new year let’s take a look back at some of the looks of 2016!

Who Started it?

At the start of the year we had celebrities like Hilary Duff adding hints of pink to their usually blonde hair, we found in salon we had people asking for soft pinks and other pastel shades. For darker hair, celebs like Kerry Washington opted for burgundy highlights, a nice change from the usual blondes.
We can’t miss Kylie Jenner out when talking about colour trends last year as her take on rose gold may be one of the most talked about colour trends, especially on Instagram. Many other celebs followed the rose gold trend with pictures of people’s take on rose gold popping up all over social media. Now getting onto mid 2016 game of thrones star Maisie Williams transformed her dark hair into a mermaid blue.

Men like to show off too

It wasn’t just women experimenting with colour this year as Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte shown when changing his naturally brown hair to a silvery blue. Unfortunately it was short lived as the chlorine from the pool soon turned it green! So depending on your hobbies or career sometimes lighter colours aren’t always a wise option. Coming into Autumn the coppers made a come back with stars like Georgia May Jagger swapping her blonde locks for light orange hues.

Before the years out

December brought on a few transformations as stars with dark hair, like Ruby Rose changed to a bright magenta pink. Rihanna opted for a blonde bob instead of the longer darker hair she is known for. It’s great for these celebs, they get their hair done everyday! So its important that together we decide on a style that suits not only you but your lifestyle as well. Unless you have alive in hairdresser of course!

Here to stay!

Out of all the colouring techniques we believe balayages/ombres have been the most popular staying in high demand. They are a good way of having lighter/different colours in your hair without the commitment.

Whats been rocking round the Christmas Tree?

As the year closes in lets look back on what trends made a differnce.

Stars like Priyanka Chopra, Selma Hayek and Sasha Lane are all working this look in their own way. An ombre is usually associated with the lighter colours and blonde tips but this is changing how we think of an ombre! If you have naturally darker hair this is the perfect look for you. We love the rich, chocolate tones coming through and it compliments the darker roots, giving you an ombre look that still leaves your locks shiny and glossy! If you want a new colour for Christmas that is low maintenance, on trend and still looks natural then book in for a chocolate ombre now.

Going against the usual choices for winter celebrities like Ciara, Emilia Clarke and Blake Lively are opting for blonde, warm tones following a technique similar to a balayage to give a sun-streaked finish inspired by surfers enjoying the sun, sea and sand. If you want this style more subtle we can do broken up streaks to give a sun kissed look instead. So if a lighter look is more you then go a sun-streaked blonde this winter instead of waiting until summer, because why not?!

If you have naturally dark hair and don’t want the maintenance of lightning your hair this may be just what your looking for. Instead of putting a jet black colour on your hair we can go for a softer, more natural colour like Shay Mitchell, Rihanna and Diane Guerrero have done. It stops your hair looking too harsh and even though its dark still allows you to to have soft, rich tones through your colour. Something we don’t see a lot but why not embrace your dark hair and have a natural black this winter.

If you want to try any of the colours and looks here then call the salon to book in or for further information on this winters trends then come into the salon for a consultation where we can advise what look will best suit you this Christmas 🙂

If you want to see the images of the looks i have mentioned and the original post about this winters hair trends look here:

Men’s Medium Hairstyles: Tips & Tricks

Men can scrub up too

If you’re a bit of a goldilocks when it comes to your hair – not too short, not too long, but in between – then you’ll be pleased to know there is plenty of inspiration when it comes to men’s medium hairstyles.

In fact, medium length hairstyles are amongst the most popular with your favourite male celebrities. Just take Chris Hemsworth’s effortless blonde tresses, Leonardo DiCaprio’s ever changing hairdos, Bradley Coopers sharp and slicked back hair or Colin Farrell’s edgy mid-length style.

With medium length hair, whether you’re rocking it long on top and sharp on the sides, or leaving at tousled and fuss-free, you’re open to more styling options that can be part shaved, straight, wavy and of course, with as little or as much product in your hair as you like.

Men’s Medium Hairstyles: Tips & Tricks

Just because you aren’t rocking an elaborate mohawk or mullet, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be spending anytime styling and maintaining the quality of your mid-length hair cut. With these easy tips and tricks you can take your mop top from drab to dapper.

#1 Start with clean, towel-dried hair.
#2 Using a blow dryer, begin directing air upwards to the scalp until fully dry.
#3 Use a brush to take down any unwanted volume on the top on sides.
#4 If you have wavy hair, work in a matte paste or cream.
#5 If you have straight hair, try a higher-shine wax. Or, for a wet look, comb through some leave-in conditioner from the root to the tip when hair is still damp.

EXPERT TIP: Anthony Nader – Raw Hair Salon Sydney

#1 Mmm the in-between style that never really defines whether you are growing your hair or if you just haven’t had time to see your Hairstylist yet. Personally, I love this look as I think it gives off a more charismatic and softer feeling to your appearance.

#2 To keep your hair more compact to your scalp so your don’t looking like a lions mane, try rinsing your hair in the coolest water temp possible and then you’ll have more control throughout the day.

#3 The other secret is if your wanting to put some product in, always add in your light weight wax into damp hair and your good to go.

#4 Calvin Klein Platinum S/S 2014 is your go to for inspiration here.

EXPERT TIP #2 – International Stylist, Kevin Murphy

#1 The current look for medium hair is basically short hair and has been slightly grown-out, just over the ears. Whatever you do, don’t over style it, you want the hair to have a natural texture and matte finish.

#2 The great thing about medium length cuts is that they’re so versatile and with the right products, you can have a new look every day.

#3 Many men don’t wash their hair properly, but if you’re going to let your hair grow out, using a good shampoo and conditioner is vital to keep it looking great.

#4 And the cut is really important. Make sure you ask your hairdresser for a square shape, because if the cut is too round it will look feminine.
