Royal Wedding

The Happy couple

Congratulations to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who were married in a fairy-tale wedding ceremony at St George’s chapel on May 19th. Prince Harry spent a lot of his childhood here and even got christened at the same chapel the royal wedding was held. Not that there needs to be a reason to want to marry here as the grounds and chapel make for stunning pictures and is more than royal wedding worthy.

Wedding dress and hair

Meghan Markle’s wedding dress for the royal wedding received mixed reviews, with some critics calling it boring and plain. It is hard to disagree that the dress was simple for a royal wedding but the simplicity of the dress was made up for with her natural beauty and stunning tiara. The veil also deserves a mention; the length was 5 metres long and took hundreds of hours to stitch, making brides-to-be envious everywhere.  The designer and look of the dress for the royal wedding was kept top secret during the build up, now we can give credit to Givenchy’s British artistic director Clare Waight Keller.

The night goes on..

The royal wedding ceremony finished and the newly married couple went to get ready for their reception at Frogmore house. When she emerged from Windsor castle with Prince Harry on her arm, with a stunning new dress. Meghan was wearing a custom made ‘lily white’ Stella McCartney gown which oozed elegance and class. We loved it and thought it suited her perfectly. @StellaMcCartney tweeted describing the dress as “a bespoke high neck lily white gown in silk crepe”. To finish the dress Meghan was wearing an aquamarine cocktail ring owned by the late Princess Diana, complete with a matching bracelet.

The Do

For her second look she opted for her signature messy bun as mentioned earlier, the finish was looser than the bun for the royal wedding done by London’s top stylist George Northwood. The newly appointed Duke and Duchess of Sussex then drove off in an iconic Jaguar E-type as they made their way to the royal wedding reception. We at limelight wish them all the happiness in the world and a long, loving marriage!

The Queen in lime green

Did anyone else notice the Queen representing limelight at the royal wedding? Her outfit matched perfectly with the salon colours.

Why Skin tests are important

Don’t take the risk, Always have a skin test

All salons require a 48 hour skin test before having any hair colour service. This is a legal requirement and any salon not performing skin tests could be prosecuted.

Why skin tests are important

Skin tests are done to make sure you don’t have any allergic reactions to the p-phenylenediamine also known as PPD. Most hair colours contain this ingredient even some organic hair colours as this is what gives the colour its depth.

What are you looking for?

There are many types of reactions to hair colour. A little bit of itching is normal as when the hair colour hits the air you feel it developing. However, more serious signs need to be watched; skin which has come into contact with PPD can become swollen, red, blistered and cracked. (This may hold similar signs to contact dermatitis.)  It can also cause you to have swelling; Nettle rash in areas not touched by PPD and can also make you feel generally unwell. These symptoms can takes hours even days to appear.

More severe allergic reactions can appear within minutes, these symptoms consists of

  • Swollen hands and feet. Eyes can swell to the point of closure
  • Swelling of the mouth and tongue. This can cause breathing difficulties.
  • Tummy pain and sickness

 How do we do it?

At least 48 hours before having a hair colour service you need to come into salon for us to perform the test. Don’t panic, this takes seconds but is worth it. We place a small amount of neat hair tint on the skin behind the ear, its then down to you to keep it on for the full 48 hours. The tint cannot get wet or be washed off during them 48 hours. Again a little bit of itching is completely normal, in some cases where you are run down or feeling unwell you may get more itching then you usually do.  But if you start to get any other symptoms at all during the duration of the test you must wipe off the hair tint and let the salon know.  Having the skin test with neat tint and without developer will not give you a server allergic reaction but does unfortunately mean you cannot have the hair colour service using that brand of hair colour. This doesn’t mean you’re allergic to all hair colours and may be worth having tests at different salons to see.

If you are colouring your hair at home you should still follow the skin testing rules before applying the colour. If you do have a reaction to a hair colour you may be able to relieve the symptoms yourself. Try washing your hair to remove any leftover dye on the scalp. Sulphate free shampoos are better for the scalp if you get sensitivity. You can also apply moisturizing cream to any affected areas. If the symptoms continue please contact your GP. Salon user should have new skin tests once a year to keep up with regulations.

Our top tips for rocking pastel coloured hair

Pastel coloured hair, what better way to celebrate the arrival of warmer climates!

We’ve braved several attacks from the ‘Beast from the East’ and even withstood the ‘Pest from the West! But spring has finally arrived. It’s time to embrace a colour splash, inspired directly from the florals finally springing up to brighten your day.

How to get pastel coloured hair

Those who are seasoned hair colouring pros will know that any time you are aiming to go lighter, takes time and patience. To get pastel coloured hair, you have to embrace the magical powers of bleach.

By bleaching your hair first, you remove the colour molecules that are already in your hair strands. This makes room for those beautiful smoky pastel colours to take over. Don’t try this at home! We never recommend  bleaching your own hair, it can be hazardous to you and your hair. With a salon professional at your aid, you can know that the strength of bleach won’t destroy your hair and they can provide you with advice on how to get that perfect floral hue in your locks.

Once your hair has been bleached (safely!), you are then free to dye your hair that perfect pink or lovely lilac colour you found on Pintrest.

Limelight Birmingham’s top tips for pastel coloured hair

Colouring hair any colour that is vastly different to what you’re used to seeing can be exciting, but it can also be daunting. Follow our top tips for pastel coloured hair to ensure a satisfying transition.

Colouring ‘Virgin’ hair

Never coloured your hair before? Consider starting with a small section of your hair to go pastel. Colouring a whole head of hair can be a long process and in turn, expensive. A small section underneath, a side streak or even using your fringe as a trial are good ways to see how you like the change before fully committing. Think Dakota Fanning circa 2016 when she rocked a few slices of peach colour through her long locks.

Getting the perfect colour

Remember that pastel colours often come up lighter than you might expect. Obviously, the whole idea behind pastel colours is a light hue, but  you might be surprised at how light they turn out. Don’t be put off! Speak to your stylist about what colour you’re aiming for and don’t panic if what they appear to be putting on your hair is a much deeper colour than you’re hoping for.

Pastel coloured hair aftercare

There are a few things that you can do to help hair that has just been bleached. The first is to choose your shampoo and conditioner carefully. Here at Limelight Salon, Birmingham, we recommend L’Oreal Professional, Vitamino Color shampoo and conditioner.

In order to maintain the fresh pastel colour vibrancy, it helps to hold off washing your hair every day. Dry shampoo is a great friend of those who opt for coloured hair. Not only does it keep your hair looking shiny and freshly washed for longer, it extends the periods needed between washes.

It’s also a really great idea to deeply condition your hair regularly. We recommend a treatment called Smartbond that prevents breakage, protects the hair from damage and preserves the health of the hair. Limelight Salon offer Smartbond for £25 per treatment.

Regular cuts for your hair will ensure you keep your fresh look appearing exactly that. It will also give you a chance to get that all important touch up to your pastel coloured hair.

L’Oreal’s Colorful Hair

Here at Limelight, we like to keep on top of the freshest trends around and educate ourselves as professionals on how best to provide those trends for our clients. For that reason, we use L’Oreal Colorful Hair. Colorful Hair is ammonia free. Ammonia is an incredibly powerful chemical that for many years was a go-to substance used in all hair dyes. Scientists, in more recent years, have realised the true extent of the damage that ammonia can cause a person’s hair. For that reason, here at Limelight, we avoid ammonia-based products and seek products that will be the kindest for your hair type.

So, when you come to us for the freshest of looks: pastel coloured hair, you can know you are in safe hands. If you’d like to speak with one of our colouring specialists about a fresh pastel look, give us a call today on 0121 442 4905.

L’Oreal professional have introduced 5 new shades to the Majirel colour family. They are suitable for natural bases between 6 (dark Blonde) -10 (lightest blonde). Using these colours on a natural base means the Metals colours come out softer. If you are darker then a level 6 or are feeling creative and want a more obvious result; you’ll need your hair Pre-lightened. This will make your hair light enough to be able to take the Metal colours. The lighter your hair colour goes the better the result. When you come to see us we can decide together what your hair needs/what you want and will be able to give you a tailor made hair plan.

How does it work?

L’oreal have increased the ratio of to base, for a visible and translucent effect. Which means the new shades do not make your hair darker or lighter but works with the existing depth and adds the desired reflect. Whether that is be pearly pink or a pastel grey look. L’Oreal are always working on their brand to come up with new on-trend ideas and products. The Metals are the next hair craze of 2018, fitting right in with the latest fashion and make up trends.

The Colour Contenders:

.11 – Silver Star – For a pastel grey look or an on-trend ash colour

.12 – Crystal Ash – For a fashionable result with a sophisticated iridescent blend

.13 – Ash Gold – For a desirable champagne blonde

.21 – Pink Ash – For a beautifully soft pink result, a mix of ash and iridescent

.22 – Hi-Lilac – For a neutralising yellow and leaving a balanced iridescent hue.

These colours are great when you walk out of the salon. But Unfortunately all good things must come to an end. If you are considering one of these colours you have to be prepared to keep it up. Depending on how often you wash your hair, these colours will be at their best for 2 weeks.  As a salon we offer top up services in-between your services to keep that salon finish for longer.

The range offers 100’s of bespoke, personalised and colourful results. Whether you want a soft Pink Sorbet or Electric Purple, the possibilities are endless.

There are 7 vibrant shades in the range but many more colours are able to be created due to the Crystal Clear, which gives us the opportunity to reduce the intensity of the colour for more pastel tones.

May the INFORCER be with you

Shampoos and conditioners are a must have in your cabinet. Your hair is at its weakest point when wet, so you have to look after it!

Do you….

Want stronger hair?

That’s softer to touch?

Easier to brush and style?

With less breakage?

If you answered YES, YES, YES then this is the product for you. Look no further than INFORCER for all your hair needs. It’s a great product for all hair types to use, with a healthy balance of protein and moisture. We understand there is a obvious difference in price between high street and professional, but its worth every penny. Most high street shampoos contain Sulpahtes, Parabens and Silicones as do ours. However, in professional shampoos, the ingredients are water soluble, so they don’t stay in the hair. If these ingredients don’t get washed out of the hair it will create a product build up, and this can open a whole other can of worms. For instance, a build up on silicone can cause your colour to not take properly, if not at all. We have cleansing shampoos in salon if you feel like there is a build up on your hair.

What’s all the fuss about?

Inforcer is a strengthening, anti-breakage shampoo and conditioner. The formula is infused with vitamin B6 and biotin to strengthen the hair and make it more resistant to breakage. B6 is good for the body in many ways such as energy and red blood cell production. However, studies have shown that B6 may prevent hair loss and encourage new growth. A 2001 study based in Poland found that B6 helped improve hair condition in a group of women suffer from diffuse alopecia. Then there’s the Biotin, to look after the hair you already have, leaving it feeling thicker and fuller.
